A bren-gunner in A Company, Fusilier Royle was killed in the initial attack on Mt Spaduro. Colin Gunner in his book ‘Front of the Line’ described him as “small and bespectacled” and a Geordie.

Sgt Elliott was killed with Major Crehan in the initial attack on Mt Spaduro. He was found later with nine others of A Company – fighting to the last.

Major Crehan was transferred from The Irish Fusiliers of Canada to command A Company of the Royal Irish Fusiliers in the summer of 1944. He was killed in a German counterattack during the Irish Brigade’s first attack on Monte Spaduro.

Fusilier Burchett was killed in the initial attack on Monte Spaduro. The stretcher bearer in B Company of the Faughs later wrote: “We had a very rough time, my mate Fusilier Burchett while carrying a wounded comrade was hit by shellfire only to die in a few minutes…” (Fling Our Banner to the Wind, Page 207).

Lieutenant Cramb, a South African volunteer and university graduate, was killed in a night attack on Casa Spinello on 21 October 1944. He was standing by Lieutenant Nicholas Mosley when he called out: “God have mercy on my soul,” and then fell and died (Time at War, Nicholas Mosley). He was the son of Percival and Olga Cramb of Pretoria.

L/Cpl Borrett was killed in the attack on Mt Spaduro. After being wounded, he crawled two miles to return, but died a few hours later, according to Fling Our Banner to the Wind (page 208).

A South African and an officer in E Company, Lieutenant Bruckmann was killed in a minefield with his company commander Ronald Boyd (see below) while advancing to Casa Spinello which had been taken the previous day by an E Company platoon the previouos day.

Major Boyd joined the London Irish Rifles from the Royal Ulster Rifles following the Battle of Cassino. He was appointed commander of E Company to replace Mervyn Davies, who had been wounded in the left arm and in the leg in the successful attack on Casa Spinello the previous day.

G Company Lance Sergeant Sye died of wounds suffered during the attack on Spinello during the Battle for Monte Spadura. He had been lying wounded for 36 hours but had refused the aid of stretcher bearers.

Lance Sergeant De Negri was on observation duty in the roof of a farm house on Monte Spaduro when his position was hit by German mortars. He was killed instantly. Details of this can be found in Colin Gunner’s Front of the Line. De Negri was the son of Victor and Lillian De Negri of Walthamstow Essex.

Lieutenant Brady was the son of Terence and Eva Brady of Holloway, London. He was attached to the 1stBattalion of the Royal Irish Rifles in the Tunisian battles in 1943 and fell into a slit trench during darkness on the night of 20 January. He broke his leg. Brady was promoted to the temporary rank of assistant captain on 19 January 1943.

Lieutenant Albert Parish was accompanying commander of the Faughs John Coldwell-Horsfall after a night raid on 19 December 1944 when a mortar bomb exploded close by. Parish was killed, and Coldwell-Horsfall suffered serious leg injuries. When he recovered, he was posted to the staff of Army HQ. Coldwell-Horsfall returned to the Irish Brigade as commander of the 2nd Battalion of the London Irish Rifles when it took up occupation duties in southern Austria after the end of the war.
