Joseph Whelan

Lance Sergeant Joseph Whelan was killed at or near Hill 286 on the evening of 20th/21st January 1943.

According to the CWGC, he was the husband of Elizabeth Whelan, of Dublin, Irish Republic.

Update as of July 2020 –

We received a nice note from James Whelan, the nephew of Joseph and Francis Whelan:

“Many thanks for this. The records I’ve seen say my uncle’s name was on Face 30 of the memorial, but this is the first image I’ve seen.
Unfortunately, I haven’t got any further info I could send for Joseph, but I have got some things for his younger brother Francis, who was killed in Malaya on 8 May 1949.
There are two photos, each showing Francis on the right. I don’t know who else is shown, but the photos might be of interest to whoever recognises the other person in each picture.
I’m also sending a picture of Francis’s grave which is found in Kranji Military Cemetery in Singapore, Section 2, Row A, Grave 1.
I hope you can make use of these pictures on the web site.”
