Liberation of Rome conference to highlight the Italian Campaign

Bookings are now open for The Liberation of Rome Conference in Anzio on 31 May-1 June 2024.

The event will examine the events leading to the end of the occupation of Rome on 4 June 1944 and their contemporary resonance.

The conference is supported by local, regional and central government in Italy and will hear from international dignitaries from nations involved in the Italian campaign as well as experts from Italy and the world.

38 (Irish) Brigade played a key role in the liberation of Rome. In April 1944, it held Monte Castellone north of Monte Cassino and on 15-17 May spearheaded the 78 Division’s assault through the Gustav Line in the Liri valley. It then pursed the German army north of Ceprano to Lake Trasimeno where it was involved in a further major battle.

On 12 June 1944, a contingent from Irish Brigade were the first Allied troops to be granted an audience in the Vatican by Pope Pius XII following the liberation of Rome earlier that month.

Admission to the conference is free for registered delegates.
